Archaic Meanings Behind Monroe County Town's Sirens

Columbia, Illinois residents argue over archaic meanings behind the towns twice daily sirens, except Sunday.  Some say it was meant for farmers signaling lunch time at noon and quitting time at 6 p.m., while others say the meaning, according to "KTVI-TV", could be much more sinister.  Illinois reportedly once had the highest number of "sundown towns" banning African Americans after sunset or 6 p.m.  Regardless, city leaders plan to continue the ritual until further notice.  Learn more behind "sundown towns" at Sundown.Afro.Illinois.Edu.
